Visit Bin El Ouidane: Complete Travel Guide to Morocco's Lake
Visit Bin El Ouidane: Complete Travel Guide to Morocco's Atlas Lake Introduction: why visit Bin El Ouidane Most visitors to Morocco see the medinas, the desert and the coast. Far fewer find the turquoise lake tucked into the foothills of the High Atlas. If you want a quiet landscape with no crowds, visiting Bin El Ouidane is one of the best choices in the country. The lake sits in the Azilal province, between Marrakech and Beni Mellal. It is a large reservoir with deep blue water, red-brown hills and olive groves around it. The pace is slow: you can take a boat trip, eat grilled fish by the water, or watch the sunset from a viewpoint above the dam. This guide covers how to get there, what to do, when to go and how to plan the trip. It also explains why having your own car makes the day much easier. What is Bin El Ouidane? Bin El Ouidane (also written Bin el Ouidane or Bine El Ouidane) is both a village and one of Morocco's most important dams. The dam was built in the early 1950s on the Oued El Abid. It holds back a large reservoir that irrigates the Tadla plain, produces hydroelectric power and supplies water to nearby towns. For travellers, the result is a scenic lake with many arms that run between the hills. The shoreline is irregular, so the views change at every turn. The water level changes with rainfall and snowmelt, so the lake can look quite different from one season or year to the next. How to get to Bin El Ouidane Public transport here is limited and slow, so the lake is best reached by car. Distances and times below are approximate: check your GPS before you leave and download an offline map, because mobile signal can drop in the hills. Starting point Approx. drive time Note Marrakech 3 hours About 200 km. Head northeast toward Beni Mellal and Azilal, then follow the signs to the lake Beni Mellal 1 hour Short and scenic drive Azilal Under 1 hour Easy add-on to a visit to Ouzoud Casablanca 4 to 5 hours Depends on traffic and the route Agadir 8 hours or more Plan an overnight stop in Marrakech, or build it into a longer Atlas road trip Why renting a car is the best way to visit The lake, the viewpoints and the villages are spread out, and taxis and buses do not connect them well. Take a boat trip on the lake A boat ride is the best way to understand the size of the reservoir. Local boatmen take small groups out on the water. You see the shoreline, hidden coves and the dam wall from below. Agree the price and duration before you board. 2. Walk around the dam and the viewpoints The dam is an impressive piece of engineering, and the views from the road above it are among the best in the area. Take your time, bring a camera, and stop at the viewpoints for photos. Do not photograph official installations if signs ask you not to. 3. Watch the sunset over the water Late afternoon is the best time for photos. The light turns the hills orange and gold, and the lake becomes calm and reflective. If you can stay until evening, you will have one of the nicest views in the Atlas. 4. Try fishing The lake is known for freshwater fishing. Anglers come for species such as carp and black bass. Rules and permits can change, so ask locally about what is allowed before you start. 5. Kayak or paddle On calm days, kayaking is a peaceful way to explore the quieter corners of the lake. Some local operators and lodges rent equipment in the warmer months. Always wear a life jacket and avoid windy afternoons. 6. Eat by the lake Several small restaurants and lodges serve grilled fish, tagine, fresh salads and mint tea with views of the water. Try the local fish if it is on the menu, and ask what is fresh that day. 7. Go camping or stay overnight For a longer visit, Bin El Ouidane camping is a good option. There are campsites, lakeside lodges, guesthouses and eco-lodges around the lake. Nights are quiet and the sky is very clear. Book ahead in spring and autumn, and bring warm clothes because evenings can be cool at this altitude. 8. Hike in the surrounding hills Trails run through olive groves, small Amazigh villages and rocky hills. Walks range from easy lakeside strolls to longer routes with big views. Wear good shoes, carry water and tell someone your route if you go far. Combine Bin El Ouidane with Ouzoud Waterfalls The best-known neighbour is Ouzoud Waterfalls, about an hour or so from the lake by road. These are among the tallest and most beautiful falls in Morocco, with monkeys, mills and small restaurants along the trail. A very good plan is to visit Bin El Ouidane in the morning, have lunch by the water, and drive to Ouzoud in the afternoon. Or do it the other way round and finish with the sunset at the lake. If you can, stay a night in the area, because the trip is long if you do both in one day from Marrakech.
